Teaching Study Skills
Dr. Handler has designed and successfully implemented a study skills program, “Have It Your Own Way,” as students in middle school, high school, college and adults learn skills that give them independence. A minimum of four factors that characterize the learner in the process of doing his/her work are taken into consideration from the start and evaluated periodically. These four factors include:
(1) the characteristic of the learner
(2) components of the materials to be learned
(3) the goals to be accomplished
(4) the required activities for the learned to reach the expected goals.
A research-based approach is used that includes practice and feedback so that a high degree of mastery is obtained. Individualized components of the program can be provided as appropriate.
Dr. Handler also provides training sessions for teachers to learn this program.
